About

Employee-selection-guide.com was launched in 2006 as a result of my quest to turn the experience I have gained over many years of recruiting and hiring great employees into a business focussed on my passion - the hiring of exceptional employees.

Many people have asked me over the years “How do you always hire such great performing employees?” Many actually wanted to know how they could find and hire their own high performance staff. Especially as the effects of great employees on your business profit is simply amazing. Just imagine if each one of your sales people sold even 20% more every year!

Employee-selection-guide.com has evolved from my own personal journey of recruiting and selecting employees. I have been in the business of hiring staff since 1989, which was when I took my first managers role and was responsible for the financial performance of the business. This business was a family owned restaurant and the performance of the wait staff in not only keeping the customers happy to ensure they returned, but in also making sales per head high enough to reach and surpass minimum profit levels was imperative.

I found that the difference in performance between my top performing staff and my bottom performing staff was as much as 100% in some instances (measured in terms of average sales per customer). So I set about learning what were the skills and attributes of those staff that performed better than others and then how I could assess for those skills and attributes and in my recruitment and selection processes. I realised that if I could hire and retain higher performing wait staff I could make the business a profit success, and so I started then on the beginning of my quest to perfect the art of attracting, hiring and retaining exceptional performing staff.

Since then I have worked in many more jobs where I honed my skills in recruitment and selection further before deciding I was so interested in the topic that I went back to university to study human resources and employment law. I wanted to learn as much as I could about the technical and scientific basis behind what I was doing as well. And I did. I found that what I had observed in terms of certain skills and attributes which could predict performance was backed up by science and that there was a movement of researchers who were working on developing measures and tests of skills and attributes which could predict on the job performance as accurately as 70% and more.

Now you might well think that 70% is pretty low. But the researchers have shown that the average person who undertakes staff recruitment without utilising any of the techniques that I will provide you in my Recruitment and Selection Guide can predict employee performance on the job by at most 10-20%. That basically means that you are taking a stab in the dark and in fact you have much more chance of choosing the wrong person than the right one.

Once I finished my university studies I took on several consulting jobs. My role being to provide advice and assistance to employers regarding human resources and employment law related issues. Many times I helped employers to recruit and select the best possible employees and I further worked on developing my expertise in this area.

I have since then further worked in human resources, recruitment and selection and in managing businesses both small and large. Over this time I have worked on perfecting and simplifying my system for employee selection and have documented it in “The Employee Selection Guide to Big Profits” in order that you too can now achieve the same success that I have in employee selection and therefore also in generating greater business profits.
